Knowing I won’t join them, the woman giggles as Nikki passes her the pipe. But I’m not laughing. I feel trapped. I can’t breathe. My head is throbbing. My heart is pounding. And my mind is whirling. How in the world did I end up in the back of a car watching strippers smoke dope? I remember Nikki inviting me to a party but can’t recall her saying snowcaps would kick off the evening’s activities. Get me out of here, God, I pray, before the cops come! I lean forward. “Hey, Nikki, don’t you think this is kinda dangerous doin' drugs right here on the street?” She responds with a string of profanity and reaches through her open window to knock out the used drugs. Then she begins to refill the pipe, starting with marijuana on the bottom. Just as she’s about to top it off with cocaine, she cries, "Where's the —— pipe screen?" Despite the fact that it’s 10:00 p.m., and despite her mini-skirt, Nikki jumps out of the car and drops to her hands and knees on the pavement. Still screaming obscenities, she crawls back and forth beside the car, furiously scouring the asphalt with her long enameled fingernails. When she can’t find the screen, she hops in the car and backs into the road, the tortured tires of her little blue Geo squealing in objection. Nikki flicks on the headlights and then crouches in the street again, this time illuminated by the car’s lights. Now, I’m really beginning to panic, though the other passenger is laughing hysterically. I hang out the window and holler, “Nikki, what if the police come?” Nikki snaps her head up. “—— the police!” Glaring into the headlights, she yells, “I’m gonna find the —— screen and I’m gonna party tonight!” |
