Despite the scar, the classic features of his handsome face caused Hannah to feel as if she were gazing upon Homer’s mighty Greek warrior, the god-like Achilles. Why had Jeremiah called him old? The man was ageless. And he was the most magnificent man she had ever seen. She could barely mask her wonder before he turned from shaking her father’s hand to meet her. As his gaze traveled from face to foot and back again, his dark eyebrows arched with obvious approval. His crooked smile was charmingly roguish. As he bent forward and took her hand to kiss it, he murmured, “Aphrodite lives.” Had any other man greeted her thus, she would have drawn back, insulted . . . or at least confounded. But his compliment seemed so appropriate in the light of her own appraisal of him that she could only smile in return. “How nice to meet you, Captain Ahab.” |
